What to expect
Königssee
Survived the first night in the van
We survived the first night in the camper van! And apart from a frozen nose, I slept perfectly fine! Blake, however, said he hadn’t slept this badly in ages (he does like to exaggerate though so who knows how badly it really was). Since you have to pay for parking from 7a.m.-8p.m. in the car park, I wanted to buy a parking ticket the night before (it was only 5€ for the entire day). But when I walked to the parking meter at night, there was already a two-day-ticket inside the machine – how lucky! After leaving the Königssee later, I put it back into the machine, just to be on the safe side (you don’t wanna mess with karma).
Boat tours were closed due to Covid
After a breakfast in front of our van (we had planned that far in advance), we walked to the Königssee, just to find out again that all the boat trips were being closed (which we already knew thanks to the Italian pizza guy). We did a little hike to two different view points on the lake instead. Of course we cannot compare them to the possible boat trip, but let’s just agree the viewpoints were just as good, probably even better.
Reit im Winkl
Further down the German alp street
The walk took about 2 hours and did a nice loop back to the car park. We can highly recommend visiting the Königssee and I was really impressed something this beautiful exists in Germany (I seem to not have the highest thoughts of Germany’s countryside). We then started the drive on the German alp street (450 km in total) and stopped in a cute little town called Reit im Winkl (after 69 km) in which we walked past some really cute typical Bavarian houses.
Aschau im Chiemgau
Take-away food in the van
Afterwards we drove further to Aschau im Chiemgau (31 km), another quaint town on the German alp street. Here we parked on a car park that we had found with the app “camp4night” and then explored the town to find something edible. One Bavarian restaurant offered take-away (unfortunately all restaurants were still closed due to Covid), so we ordered, walked a bit more around town and went back to the car with our Bavarian specialities.
Job interview in the van
However, before we could actually eat them, Blake had a job interview: in the back of the car via zoom, not showered for 2 days and with a car light that kept switching off every 20min. But it looks like all these factors didn’t scare his future boss away as he offered Blake the job in the end of the call.
Previous day: Day 1 & 2: Gelsenkirchen – Regensburg – Königssee
