06/12/2022 From Cusco, Peru to Copacabana, Bolivia
What to expect
Puno, Lake Titicaca, Peru
Why are we doing this?
Taking the bus company “Peru Hop” to cross the border from Peru to Bolivia was very easy! On the bus we were woken up at 5.15 a.m. in Puno at Lake Titicaca as we had signed up for a two-hour-boat ride on the lake.
It was grey and cold outside, I was tired and grumpy and I had no idea why we had thought the previous night that it would be a good idea to sign up for this tour.
Do a boat trip to the Floating Islands
It was, however, quite interesting to see how the local Uru tribes live on the floating islands on the lake. What I didn’t like though was that they tried to charge us for another boat ride, the locals tried to sell us souvenirs and even the local kids danced for us and then wanted money. Oh well, I guess you can’t blame them for trying to make more money when tourists come to see their island/ home every day.
Easy border crossing
Crossing the border two hours later took about five minutes before we hopped onto another bus (“Bolivia Hop”) on the other side of the border. Blake and I decided to stay in Copacabana at Lake Titicaca for one night.
Copacabana, Lake Titicaca, Bolivia
Nice to see you again
Funnily, we ran into an English girl that we had done white water rafting with in Banos, Ecuador. Then we met another American girl, who we had done the waterfall hike in Cotopaxi National Park in Ecuador with. And the following morning we ran into two Irish girls who we had spent four days with on the San Blas Islands – such a small backpacker world!
Stroll around town
For the rest of the day we went out for lunch, walked around town and looked at all the interesting street (food) markets. In the end we ate take-away dinner crawled up in bed.
Since Copacabana lies at 3800m, it’s been really cold here.! The cold shower at our hotel Sky Lake B&B didn’t really help there to warm us up either. So lots of blankets and hoodie and thick socks in bed it is!
07/12/2022 From Copacabana to La Paz
Breakfast with a view
In the next morning we “enjoyed” our free breakfast outside on the rooftop while it was 8°C and a little rainy! At least we had a nice view onto the lake. Since we arrived at the breakfast place shortly before it ended (as we always do), most of it had been gone already. This day could only get better 😉.
See the town from above
After check-out Blake and I did a little hike up a mountain. From here we had a great view over the small town and Lake Titicaca.
Off to la Paz
In the evening “Bolivia Hop” picked us up again to get us to la Paz (which is NOT Bolivia’s capital). Even though Lake Titicaca was a nice way to split up the long drive between Cusco and la Paz, it wasn’t an outstanding stop for us.
