Milford Sound
Famously described […] as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’, Milford Sound/ Piopiotahi is breath-taking in any weather – with its fiord’s cliffs, mountainous peaks and waterfalls as high as 1000 metres. When it rains in Milford Sound, and it often does, those waterfalls multiply with magnificent effect.”

High hopes
I was very excited about today as we were going to do a cruise around the fiords of Milford Sound. Being smart (or cheap?!) backpackers, we had booked our ferry online through bookme.co.nz and got a NZD $30 discount each.
The last time I had done this boat trip was in 2005 and I remember it as being such a magical experience. So it was clear to say I had quite high hopes.
Just in time
The drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound was already stunning with huge mountains and cascading waterfalls all around us.
As always, we got there just in time and after sprinting the last few metres (while figuring out which boat would be ours), we made it as the last ones onto the boat.
The eighth wonder of the world
The two hours on the boat flew by and it was truly magical: There were massive waterfalls all around us, seals were bathing on the rocks and we spotted one penguin swimming in the water next to our boat.
I thought it couldn’t get any better, but then we saw a bunch of dolphins playing around! I highly recommend everyone to go here! Make sure you’ll take the early boat for a better chance of wildlife spotting.
Perfect timing
Just when we left the boat, it started to rain, which made the waterfalls on the drive back to Wanaka look even more impressive. Sometimes it’s all about timing 😉.
