21/07/2022 Family time in Calgary
What to expect
Calgary
Relaxing start for one of us
Thursday started off quite relaxing – at least for one of us. While I was having a peaceful morning around the apartment, Blake was running around doing different errands. This included getting his passport renewed (exactly what you do four days before leaving home for a year) and sorting out his money situation. We think that DKB is the best because it’s not charging any extra fees when getting money out at foreign ATMS.
Family time with my new “sister-in-law”
In the afternoon I went over to Blake’s sister for some “sister-in-law-quality-time” (yes, I did just say that because it’s true now 😊). I also played with her kids Soleia and River who I absolutely adore.
Unknown engagement celebrations
In the evening we had a family gathering with Blake’s mom’s side of the family. I had no idea but apparently they were all coming because of our engagement – good to know 😉!

Edmonton
On Friday we were off to see more family in Edmonton (about 3.5 hours away).
Meeting extended family and friends
We met Blake’s cousins and other extended family there who were all really friendly and welcomed us with lots of food and drinks.
At night we met another of Blake’s friends in a pub who Blake had worked with in the past.

Lots of family time
In the next morning we had a delicious breakfast (crepes and fresh fruit) at Blake’s second cousin’s place before going to see the rest of the family from the previous night again.
Stopover in Red Deer
On the way back to Calgary, Blake, his parents and I stopped in a town called Red Deer to meet Blake’s aunt Sheila for a visit.
Back in Calgary, Blake and I went over to Blake’s high school friends Brett and Chelsea for take-away pizza on their deck.
It was a really nice day, but also a little bit of a socializing-overfloat 😉.
24/07/2022 Last day in Calgary, Canada
The last day in Canada
The sad part of traveling
And just like that, two weeks in Canada have come to an end. This day meant two things in particular:
- saying goodbye to Blake’s family and
- PACKING – luckily only for Blake.
I’d say Blake and I have two things in common: we are great planners, but our time-management sucks.
So after a very great morning with Blake’s family and a very sad goodbye with his sister, her husband and their kids, it was time to start packing and run the last errands.
Running last-minute errands
In the afternoon we headed to the nearby shopping mall for some of Blake’s last essentials that he needed for our world trip. Thank God, shops are open on Sundays in Canada. By 6 p.m. – just when all the shops were about to close – we bought the last item on Blake’s to-do list.
Are we going to catch our flight on time?
It is now 7p.m.. Blake’s parents are coming over in half an hour for our last dinner together before our trip and Blake has neither packed nor does his room look anywhere close to leaving it for one year (Blake lives together with his dad as his dad is not in the best health condition).
Our flight leaves at 6a.m. tomorrow morning and I have no idea how Blake is going to manage packing and getting everything ready until then.
I only know one thing: We will both have to be on this plane to our first “real” world-trip-destination. (Canada only half counts as it feels like home to me.)
