03/03/2023 From Brisbane to Surfers Paradise
What to expect
Surfers Paradise
In 2011 I studied in Surfers Paradise for one semester and had the very best time!! This is why I couldn’t wait to come back here and show Blake where I partied… I mean studied.
Visit Sheraton Island
We got here at 8.30 a.m. (after catching the bus at 7 a.m. in Brisbane). Before being able to check in at 2 p.m. we went somewhere I’ve never been before in the four months of living here: Sheraton Island. Blake had found this cute man-made lake with the skyline of Surfers Paradise in the background, where we relaxed for a bit.
Explore the town
Afterwards we walked around Surfers and I was surprised about how many new shops, malls and skyscrapers had been built here (I shouldn’t really be surprised though since my semester abroad was almost 12 years ago).
Go to the beach
Next, we went to Surfers’ beautiful long sandy beach with the iconic yellow lifeguard shack on it.
Visit the market on the esplanade
I was quite excited when Blake informed me that there is a market going on at the esplanade today. Unfortunately, it was mainly an artesian market. The souvenirs all looked great, but we wanted food!
Watch sunset at Nerang River
This is why we got some take-away food instead (the usual: sushi for me and pizza for Blake). We grabbed the rest of the bottle of red wine from the wine tasting in Cromwell and went to Appel Park next to Nerang River for sunset.
Go partying
And then – when I was already in bed and ready to call it a night (especially after the early bus ride to Surfers), Blake “made me” get up again to go out since it was a Friday night. And wow, was I motivated… I have to admit though, once we did go out, it was a lot of fun partying in Surfers Paradise like in the good old times. However, we did both notice that we were probably some of the oldest ones in the club and that most of the party people around us were still as young as I was when I had studied here eleven years ago.
04/03/2023 Gold Coast
Southport
Party at the holi festival of colours
In the morning we took the tram to another town on the Gold Coast named Southport. I’ve never taken place in a holi festival before, but I had always wanted to. So today was the day!
A festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil, Holi is a celebration of the arrival of spring and harvests to come. It’s the Holi festival of colors, emotions, and happiness. And what better way to express yourself than with the vibrant colors of the rainbow?”

After paying AUD $10 for the entry and a little bag with colourful powder inside, we were on the festival ground, where literally everyone was covered in all sorts of colours. It looked awesome! We quickly began throwing colours at each other and at strangers and danced in front of the main stage.
It was a really unique experience that we both enjoyed a lot!
Burleigh Heads
Relax at the beach
Once we were completely covered in colours, we caught the tram to Burleigh Heads, where we relaxed at the beach.
Have a picnic in John Laws Park
Afterwards we grabbed some food to go and sat down at the side of the beach while looking at the skyline of Surfers Paradise in the background. It was also fun to watch the real surfers catch some big waves.
Walk to the lookout in Burleigh Head National Park
In the end we walked to the viewpoint in the Burleigh Head National Park. Here we enjoyed the view of Surfers Paradise with the beautiful long sandy beach. I’m so glad we got to experience Surfers Paradise together and even got to see new places that I had never been to before.
