23/11/2022 From Lima to Paracas
Short bus ride
You know you’ve been travelling for a while when you think four hours on a bus is a short time. I almost felt rushed listening to my meditation podcast, writing the next blog post (I usually pre-write the post about the past stop when I’m offline), listening to another Spanish podcast and listening to a normal podcast.
Also, we can highly recommend “Peru Bus”, which was so much more comfortable than the last horrible and smelly bus ride from Huaraz to Lima.
What to expect

Great hostel
Our hostel Willy’s House was actually really nice! It was right in town, the room was big and clean, the bed comfortable and we had our own bathroom with even hot water – all aspects you don’t take for granted when traveling for a while 😉. And for $10 p.p. including free breakfast you couldn’t complain!
Drink pisco sour
Blake and I walked along the beach promenade and sat down in one of the beach bars for some seafood and two pisco sours.
A pisco sour is an alcoholic cocktail of Peruvian origin that is typical of Peruvian cuisine. The drink’s name comes from pisco, which is its base liquor, and the cocktail term sour, in reference to sour citrus juice and sweetener components. The Peruvian pisco sour uses Peruvian pisco as the base liquor and adds freshly squeezed lemon juice, siple syrup, ice, egg white, and Angostura bitters!”

Whereever would be a better place to try them than right next to the town Pisco (maybe in Pisco itself, I give you that).

Rent some bicycles
Even though I just raved about our great hostel, the breakfast was pretty disappointing (dry buns and oily scrambled eggs). But it was free, so no complaints at all!
The National Park (“Reserva Nacional de Paracas”) is the main attraction why people come to the small town of Paracas. You can book an organized tour through the national park. But we wanted to explore the park on our own in our own speed. So bike rentals it is!
Explore the Reserva Nacional de Paracas
The wind was definitely not on our side as it was blowing against us the entire way, which made even the tiniest hills seem like a major mountain.
Playa Roja
But eventually we made it to Playa Roja inside the National Park which looked very beautiful with its red sand and stunning rock formations.
On the way back, the wind had heard our prayers (or were we just cycling in the opposite direction?). Either way, cycling was fun again and we enjoyed the masses of desert all around us! We hardly met any other people on the trip. So it really did feel like being in the middle of the desert.
Cocktail at the beach
Back in town, we ordered two pisco sour “para llevar” (which means “to go” – wow I feel like a native by now 😛) and sat down at the beach to enjoy the last rays of sun.
Getting sick?
In the evening we went out for Peruvian dinner at Pukasoncco, whose chef is also an artist. This is why two big naked breasts were pointing at me behind Blake on the wall during dinner. Unfortunately, this is when I started feeling very cold. Back in the hotel those shivers turned into full on shaking under the warm blanket.

Cancelling our tour
In the next morning I woke up with a fever, a headache and achy joints. This is why we had to cancel our ATV tour through the desert unfortunately. (luckily, Blake was a star and got most of our money back.)
How will I make it to the next town?
Since we had already booked the bus to the next town and had made a deposit for the next hostel, we had to get my sick body on the bus somehow. Luckily, it was only a 1.5-hour-bus ride to the next very unique place. It was just unfortunate timing that for the first time in Peru we had booked a dorm room – way to recover…
