03/04/2023 From Australia to Indonesia
It felt weird leaving Wally (our campervan on Australia’s West Coast) behind. Now it’s just us and our backpacks again.
Will we be let into the country?
The flight to Bali went really well! At the airport in Denpasar, Bali, we were almost not let into the country as we didn’t book a flight out of the country. That was because of three reasons:
1. We didn’t know we needed a flight out (usually we are good at checking what we need for entering each country)
2. We didn’t know how long we were going to stay in Indonesia and
3. We didn’t know which country we’d travel to after Indonesia.
A fake flight ticket
Luckily, the homepage “bestonwardticket” sends you a fake flight ticket for little money. We had already used that for Costa Rica and it had worked!
Within minutes we had our “flight ticket to Bangkok”, showed it to the immigration officer and here we are now: we’ve missed you, Bali!
A real bed at last
It was already 8 p.m. when we collected our backpacks. We got money from an ATM, caught a taxi to Ubud (about 1.40 hours) and then fell happily but exhausted into the first real bed again since Perth.

Ubud
We loved being back in Bali since our last visit in 2019.
Why we love Bali
It sounds cheesy, but Bali is our “happy place”! We love the landscape, the weather, the people, the culture, the massages and the fact that everything is so cheap here for Western standards (and especially after Hawaii, Fiji, New Zealand and Australia). And we absolutely love the food here! It’s so delicious, flavourful, healthy and inexpensive!
A great hotel for little money
Our hotel, called “The Kalangan” is beautiful! It has a nice pool surrounded by pretty palm trees, big banana leaves and beautiful flowers. Our verandah is spacious with a sunbed, a table and the most decorative door that leads to a big room inside.
We ate our breakfast on our verandah that is included in the room price (14€ p.p. per night).
In order to recharge our batteries, we mainly relaxed on the first day and only got up for a one-hour-massage (for 8€!), which was incredible and also took place inside the hotel.
Chaos on the streets
In the afternoon we walked into town, which felt a bit overwhelming after the unpopulated West Coast of Australia. Here it was pure chaos!
- There were scooters and cars congesting the main road, so we were actually faster walking beside the road on the non-existing sidewalk.
- Furthermore, there were people trying to sell us tours to the temple or kept shouting at us “taxi”.
- Then there were all these different familiar Asian smells.
- And unfortunately, there was also a lot of garbage on the side of the road. Sadly, this is a big problem all over Bali.
Amazing food
We had dinner at our favourite restaurant: Clear Café. Honestly, everything about this restaurant is amazing and it is so healthy, too! The restaurant itself has a great design and has got another location in Canggu as well.
For dessert we got some treats at Bali Buda. And with those we walked back to our hotel very happily (but also very careful that we wouldn’t be run over by a scooter or taxi).
