18/07/2022 From Calgary to Fernie
What to expect
A short trip to Fernie
On Monday we drove to Fernie for a three-day-trip with Blake’s family. It was an easy four-hour-drive – just around the corner for Canadian standards. We stayed at Fernie Stanford Resort which was decorated with a lot of ski gear – the perfect place for a summer vacation 😉.

Fernie
The next day we enjoyed the breakfast buffet, which was tasty. However, I was a bit shocked at how much single-use plastic was used (plastic cutleries wrapped in plastic, plastic plates and plastic cups).
New day – new float
We decided to go floating on Elk River, this time with Blake’s sister, her husband, their two kids and Blake’s dad. Luckily, our accommodation was located right at the lake so we didn’t have to think about logistics of driving with two cars to pick one of them up later.
We sat Blake’s dad into the paddleboat together with Blake. That way neither of them could fall into the water (just a quick reminder how Blake was the only one who fell into the water on our last float from Banff to Canmore 😉).
Trying not to fall into the water
For some reason, Blake’s sister’s kids (3 & 6) wanted to go on the stand-up paddleboard with me. This felt like a lot of responsibility because I found it was enough work to keep myself from not falling off the SUP. Somehow, we made it without falling in and had an amazing float with a stop in between where we jumped into the water.
A beaver says hi!
In the end we got off the paddleboards right at our accommodation. And while we were turning the boards to the shore, a beaver came right towards us – only in Canada! It wouldn’t have surprised me if it had even waved to us with its tail.
After the float we took the kids to the resort’s swimming pool and all went down the big water slide which made me feel like a kid again!
When we came back to the accommodation Blake’s mom had cooked an amazing dinner for us, which was just what we needed after a whole day outside.
20/07/2022 From Fernie to Calgary
Catching up with Blake’s friends in Fernie
Before leaving Fernie, Blake and I caught up with Blake’s friend Brittany and her partner. Even though they are from Edmonton, Alberta, we had met up with them in Fernie last year around the same time as well. I guess Fernie is just a really nice holiday place for Canadians in summer and winter. They had already done a world trip so it was interesting to hear about their travel stories.
Back in Calgary
Meeting Blake’s former teacher
The drive back to Calgary was stunning again! In the evening we were invited by Blake’s former elementary school teacher for dinner which was so enjoyable and tasty.
