Uncomfortable night bus ride
How is it possible for a bus to arrive early at the final destination? The plan was to take the later bus in Huaraz, so that we’d have less time to kill until our check in at the Secret Garden Hostel at 2 p.m.. But instead of arriving at 7 a.m., we got to Lima before 5.30 a.m.. I think that said a lot about the bus driver’s fast driving skills… Furthermore, the bus smelt horribly (I swear it wasn’t us after the hike 😉). Additionally, the ride was very windy with little leg space. Next time we do have to invest in a better bus and stop saving money on the wrong ends 😉.
What to expect
Lima
Grateful for the extra sleep
Luckily, the hostel let us in early and even gave us a room for free, in which we could sleep for four hours until check out at 10 a.m.. That definitely made a huge difference, which we were very grateful about. When we woke up, I still had a headache from the hike up to 4600m on the previous day. But breakfast and a shower certainly helped.
Today we’d be going to have another highlight on our trip: We were going to see Kygo live!
Watch a concert
When we were still in Central America, we checked the tour dates of Kygo just for fun since he is our favourite DJ. He was going to perform in three different cities in South America, that we were going to visit at some point.
Staying flexible
However, our flexibility is most important to us on our trip. Therefore, we didn’t want to lock ourselves in for any dates in the future. (This is also why we booked the Amazon and the Galapagos Islands on the day before each trip, which worked out surprisingly well.)
We were even happier, when we found out in Mancora that it was actually going to work out with being able to attend the concert in Lima.
The concert was amazing!! The two opener DJs were fantastic, too and already set us in the right party mood.
Awesome performance
We loved seeing Kygo live for the first time and were so impressed by the three live performers that came with him on stage, him playing the keyboard and the piano live and the orchestra he had brought on stage. Furthermore, the light show was incredible and so were the fireworks at the end of the show! With “only” 10 000 fans at this open air concert, it felt quite intimate, too.
Seeing Kygo perform live in Lima, Peru is definitely an experience we will never forget!

Making breakfast ourselves for once
In the next morning we made our own yoghurt bowls in a long time. (I guess normally, we either get a free breakfast or are on the hunt for those tasty acai bowls – luckily, Blake loves them just as much as I do 😉.)
Join a free walking tour
After a very relaxing morning with watching some of the world cup games, we joined a free walking tour in the afternoon. I wouldn’t recommend the Inca Milky Way tour as I found it very hard to understand the guide. Maybe I was still too flashed from the concert from the night before, who knows 😉.
Eat churros at Churros San Francisco
After the (boring) tour I needed some sugar to lift up my energy level. What better way to get lots of sugar fast than to eat hot churros with a filling. Apparently “Churros San Francisco” has the best churros in the city, which confirmed the long line up in front of the little shop. For 0,75€ each, you could choose between churros with chocolate, custard or “menjar blanco” (a cream that is made with sugar, almonds, milk and ground rice).
All three, por favor!
Since we couldn’t decide, we ordered all three (who knew if we’d ever come back, probably not😉). With the chance of getting diabetes after eating all of them, we can confirm: they were all awesome!
Watch the Magic Water Circuit
Afterwards we walked for about 45 minutes to the “Parque de la Reserva” and got a freshly squeezed orange juice from a lady on the street on the way.
Every night at 7 p.m. the park displays Peru’s history in the fountains, which was such an impressive spectacle.

No chance to leave Lima
Normally, we wanted to leave Lima today. But since there are protests going on, the roads around Lima were all blocked and none of the buses were driving.
It actually worked out really well for us, since we happened to have a very relaxing day in Lima.
In the morning I walked to a café on my own, while Blake was watching the world cup games in an Irish Pub.
Have lunch at Al Toke Pez
Afterwards we walked to “Al Toke Pez” together, which is only a little hole in the wall but had a long queue in front of it. Blake had found it on a blog and it also got recommended by the hostel‘s receptionist. Furthermore, it had been on a German cooking show, so we had to try it! The little restaurant only offered three different seafood dishes or a combination of all three. Just like with the churros on the previous day, we couldn’t make a decision and ordered all three (to share). The portion ($6) was massive (even to share) and the ceviche, the rice with seafood and the fried calamari were all delicious!
Watch sunset at the Malecón de Miraflores
After lunch we walked to the “Malecón de Miraflores”. The cliffs had been formed from a tsunami and earthquake in 1746. A shopping mall with lots if international brands had been built on top of the cliffs.
Lots of “gringos”
It was quite obvious how there were mainly internationals in this area. Watching the sun set into the ocean from the top of the malecón was beautiful and we were glad we hadn’t been able to move on to the next town just yet.
23/11/2022 From Lima to Paracas
Protests are over
It looked like the protests were over. After a very delicious acai bowl (didn’t need to overdo it with the self-made bowls 😉), we took an uber to the bus stop to make sure the buses were driving again. They confirmed it, so we bought our bus tickets, took an uber back to the hostel, checked out, grabbed our bags and headed back to the bus stop.
Since I’m not a huge fan of big cities, I was very excited for the next smaller town on the coast: Paracas.
